The Din begins in another moment! The Divine ruling on an entire year and life itself is hanging in the balance… we need to daven and cry out to Hashem! To beg Heaven that year 5784 should be a sweet and good one. That no more children will become orphans this year. That we should not hear new and shocking tragedies.

We wish we could be at the Kosel Hamaaravi at this moment, to approach Hashem and beg for our lives!

And we really are there. Our sheluchim are there, and a person’s shaliach is like himself. They are standing before Hashem during the last moments of year 5783 and pleading with Him at the closest place in the world to the Kodesh Kodoshim.

Gedolei Yisrael are going for us to the Kosel Hamaaravi!

They are leaving everything else behind at the most significant time – in order to daven for Vaad Harabbanim’s donors. At the critical hours when year 5783 is drawing to a close, they are pleading for us at Shaar Hashamayim.

We are going into Yemei Hadin protected by a tremendous spiritual force: The Gedolei Hatorah are decreeing for us chayim tovim! They are bentsching us at the holiest place in the world, a moment before Hakadosh Baruch Hu sits on the Throne of Judgment!

“With the power of this Tefilah” – this is how Moreinu Posek Hador Harav Hagaon R’ Yosef Shalom Elyashiv zt”l expressed it – “The Maamad Tefilah of Vaad Harabbanim on Erev Rosh Hashanah has the power to change a person’s gezar din to life….”

 

Tefilah

Our hearts quiver every Elul anew. What will be decreed upon us for the coming year? Will we have health? Will we manage with parnassah? What about shidduchim for our children or for us? What will our daily life look like, will we be happy and satisfied, or chas v’shalom…

On Rosh Hashanah, there is a question mark hanging over everything we have. Nothing we are accustomed to is guaranteed to still be ours: eyesight, hearing, breathing. The ability to get up and move our feet forward. To smear butter on a slice of bread. To chew food, to taste and swallow it. How many people this year lost their ability to eat, and are fed through a tube?

What about mental health? This is an issue that affects children and adults alike.

And parnassah – will we have the means to give generously and with an open hand, or will we need to cut back?

Take a look at your dear family. Your parents, siblings, children. Go over them in your mind’s eye, from oldest to youngest. What do you want for them in the coming year?

It’s enough to just leaf rapidly through the requests for support that came in recently to the offices of Vaad Harabbanim in order to understand how much we need to cry out to Hashem.

Vaad Harabbanim is not trying to scare you. The Divine judgement is a very serious thing; that’s a fact we all know. We are just saying that the words of the וּנְתַנֶּה תּוֹקֶף prayer are graphically depicted in the events of the past year. They can be seen so clearly in the cases that Vaad Harabbanim is called upon to handle.

The words of וּנְתַנֶּה תּוֹקֶף are not there to scare you. Hashem is revealing to us the nature of the day. He is showing us the way to merit a good year: ותשובה, ותפילה, וצדקה! Let’s give our tzedakah to the aniyim of the Gedolei Hador, and they will daven for us at the Shaar Hashamayim!

The Gedolei Hador are crying out to Hashem for our coming year! They, who truly feel the depth of the Divine Judgement, who know for what and how to gain zechuyos – they are tearing open the gates of Heaven for us at the holiest place in the world, during the most critical hours!

 

Tzedakah

We all donate, of course, because how can you start a new year without tzedakah to the poor of Eretz Yisrael? A Jew won’t go into the Yemei Hadin without having donated to these aniyim.

We want you to know what happens with your tzedakah. You give, and your money goes to sustain thousands of Jews. The children of ill parents, suffering orphans, widows burdened to the breaking point just to have another day on which a meal will be on the table and there will be clean clothes for everyone. Your tzedakah enters homes that are challenged by unusual troubles, parents suffering financial breakdown or emotional breakdown or both. And in your zechus, children from broken homes will go to school like everyone else.

The tzedakah that you gave will ascend to Shamayim and join with the fervent tefilos of the Tzaddikim combined with the power of Torah. The tzedakah about which Hakadosh Baruch Hu said that it saves from death, and the Tefilah in the place of the greatest kedushah in the world…

And you will be signed and sealed for a Shanah Tovah Umesukah!

How was this past year for you? How many happiness-engendering gifts did you receive – and how many challenging situations did you find yourself faced with? How many times did you stop and say to yourself: It’s such a shame I didn’t daven more for this during the Yamim Nora’im?

The coming year will be better, b’ezras Hashem! Your year 5784 is beginning with the fervent Tefilah of the Gedolei Hador at the Kosel Hamaaravi. They are coming with the power of Torah and the power of tzedakah to decree Chayim Tovim for you! Good health, abundant parnassah, shalom bayis and good shidduchim, nachas, and simchah and true tranquility…
