Purim 5781, this year more than ever, the borders are closed, one lockdown follows on the heels of another and so many families are crying out for urgent help amidst the tragedy of Coronavirus which has desperately stricken thousands of families.
Purim has plenty of color. The costumes are original, the mishloach manos look great, the music adds to the happy atmosphere…
But the day really has four mitzvos.
Sending portions of food, reading the Megillah, eating a se’udah, and: Matanos l’Evyonim.
People pour a lot of money and energy into their mishloach manos. They are generous with the Purim se’udah, as well.
When the shaliach of Rav Chaim Kanievsky shlita arrives at the door of a Vaad Harabbanim family, and discreetly delivers them an envelope, it is much more important than the sixth or twelfth prettily wrapped mishloach manos that you might be sending out on Purim. It is much more significant than the fancy dish that you might be serving at the se’udah, as well.
Because this is the giant mitzvah of tzedakah, this is the great and colossal mitzvah of Matanos l’Evyonim, this is it!
This is the precious, amazing and crucial event of the day that not only fulfills your solemn Halachic obligation in the very best way known to our generation, but also connects you in a living, breathing, tangible bond of love and brotherhood to all Jews everywhere, Gantz Klal Yisrael.
This is your long arm of chesed that you extend on Purim day to the beloved members of your people, of Hashem’s people, who are in very dire straits right now. They need your help, and you are giving it!
Last but certainly not least, this is your connection to the Gedolei v’Tzaddikei Hador. They spoke, and you listened. You are with them and they are with you. It’s as simple as that.
You want to know that you got the most out of the money you earned during the course of the year. You worked hard for it. The money didn’t come easy. Surely not in these difficult times. So please, spend your money well, whether you have a lot of cash to throw around, or whether you have hardly any at all.
Join with Vaad Harabbanim in the amazing Matanos l’Evyonim event, because it is considered in Shamayim as if each partner in this precious mitzvah donated the whole sum. And that means millions. This is your chance to gain the merit of giving like a billionare, while giving according to your means.
The poor are waiting for you. The Gedolei Hador are waiting for you.
Matanos l’Evyonim to Vaad Harabbanim, and A freilechen Purim!!
