Matanos Laevyonim

Who doesn’t know it is Adar? And if such a person exists, would it even help to talk to him?

You know already that the month of Adar comprises the holiday of Purim, and you are well aware that this holiday contains the absolutely magnificent and exalted mitzvah of matanos l’evyonim. And you realize that the right way to fulfill this mitzvah is through Vaad Harabanim. That’s what the Gedolei Hador say, and have been saying all along.

This is for all sorts of reasons. There are hiddurim and other halachos that Vaad Harabanim insists on.

For instance, the money is distributed on Purim day itself, bo bayom. And it is distributed on the day of Purim that the donor himself observes (if the donor keeps Shushan Purim, it will be distributed then.) And it is distributed early enough in the day, as well as in an appropriate tender, to practically serve the needs of the Purim se’udah. And of course it will be given only to true and deserving evyonim.

You probably didn’t think about all these things. There are lots of other big and little matters that we won’t bore you with. You are mainly concerned with giving your matanos l’evyonim money to a reliable body that will do all this for you. Why should you have to fuss over the details?

You’re right. That’s why Vaad Harabanim ascertains that everything is done in a way you would be happy with, in a way that meets the demanding Halachic standards of the Gedolei v’Poskei Hador. This way you can just give, and then go enjoy your Purim, without having to worry about a thing. You can even put on a ridiculous costume and get drunk, as far as we are concerned. Everything is taken care of.

Not to forget the steady rabbinical and professional legal supervision over all activities, and the fact that Vaad Harabanim ascertains that your tzedaka money is delivered promptly, in its entirety, to the most deserving recipients. There is a tried and true system set up to do all that.

It just works. Make Purim by giving matanos l’evyonim through Vaad Harabanim. You will be dancing with joy.

The Letter of the Posek Hador Zt’’l

Harav Hagaon Yosef Shalom Elyashiv zt”l didn’t waste words, neither was he given to flowery expressions of speech, or exaggerations. He stated the facts exactly as they are, with precision befitting the world’s leading Posek Halachah. That’s why you can rely on what he says about Vaad Harabanim.

When he stated his preference regarding the mitzvah – “It is mehudar to send one’s matanos l’evyonim money to Vaad Harabanim” – he meant it. You can rely on this just as you would on his other Halachic rulings.

Harav Elyashiv knew what he was talking about, because he personally supervised Vaad Harabanim’s affairs. He was there from day one. He stated categorically that money donated to Vaad Harabanim will go into the hands of true aniyim and that every relevant halachah will be adhered to rigorously. Today’s Gedolei Hador make sure Vaad Harabanim keeps up this standard to the utmost.

The Letter of Rav Chaim Shlita

The humble home of Harav Hagaon Chaim Kanievsky shlita pulls in Jews from all over the world. People will fly across any ocean just to hear a couple gems from Rav Chaim’s mouth. He is the Sar Hatorah.

And he has something to tell you: “Vaad Harabanim is matanos l’evyonim in the most mehudar manner.”

Rav Chaim puts to rest any doubts about the matter. So just give, and go enjoy your Purim. Haman is dead. Your money is distributed. What do you have to worry about?

Send Them the Light

You want to give them something. Those poor, suffering aniyim need your help, and Purim is the greatest time to give it. There are lots of poor and needy Jews out there, don’t you know it.

How are you going to find them? Who has time on Purim to go looking for the worthiest recipients, and how will you be able to recognize them, even if you find them? What are you doing to do, press twenty-dollar bills into every outstretched hand? You can do that if you want, but there is a better and more efficient way to give to the poor.

So give. Give those poor Jews the Purim light, the Purim joy, the Purim gelt, and you know it’s done right. That’s why you, and the rest of K’lal Yisrael, give through Vaad Harabanim. After you do this, you truly have reason to rejoice.

So make your matanos l’evyonim through Vaad Harabanim, and then pour yourself a drink. Lechayim!!!
