From the teachings of Moreinu Rosh Hayeshivah Harav Hagaon Aharon Yehudah Leib Steinman zatzal
A heavy mourning descended on the Jewish people when the Gedol Hador, Torah luminary of our generation, passed away. For decades, he participated in the leadership of that great tzedaka enterprise known as Vaad Harabbanim l’Inyanei Tzadaka b’Eretz Hakodesh. He gave of his spirit and bore Vaad Harabbanim in his heart, since it was established until this day. He gave long hours of his time for all matters of Vaad Harabbanim, and bestowed of his great wisdom at all times, to care for orphans and widows and other needy Jews in every city and town throughout Eretz Yisrael.
Moreinu Rosh Hayeshivah Harav Steinman zatzal would often hold meetings of the Gedolei Hador in his home for the sake of Vaad Harabbanim. At one such meeting, after moments of silence had enveloped the room, Rav Steinman suddenly declared: “Hakadosh Baruch Hu causes poor people to exist, in order to bestow merits on the Jewish people. When there is a gezeirah on a Jew, Hakadosh Baruch Hu places before him the wondrous tzedakah of Vaad Harabbanim. In this way, he gives tzedakah not only to one poor person but to many poor people, so that his giving of tzedakah should rescue him.”
